little darling:

Naomi trying on her flower girl dress, before chaos ensued. The wedding's only six weeks away, and I'm probably more nervous about it than she is.

I told her all her tomato plants died, but she's been an optimist, proving me wrong. Somehow they keep producing tomatoes. She picked five of them off completely brown and broken stems. She picks them and Lucas eats them.

Naomi is becoming more inquisitive. She is big on accuracy, which I like, but I don't want her to stress out over the little things like I do. Here are some of her recent questions and comments:

N: Why do they draw ducks yellow, when they're not really yellow?
Me: Maybe because it's easier to see in drawings than brown or white? (Yeah, okay, I shouldn't try to guess. Manny reminded me that ducklings can be yellow, although all the ducklings Naomi's seen have been brown, too).

N: Mosquitoes poke, actually [instead of bite].

N: Why do they call it a towel?
Me: I don't know.
N: Like popcorn is popped. But a towel--why is it a "towel"?
Me: ...

N: This is my third life.
Me: Huh? We only live and die once.
N: Then why are we supposed to be born twice? [meaning born again]

lucas is one!

Favorite Foods: Fruit, chicken, yogurt, turkey meatloaf, noodles.
Favorite Activities: Imitating Naomi, driving anything he sees as vehicular, dancing, playing instruments, flirting with women, watching kids run, playing in the laundry basket, putting caps and lids back on, transferring/collecting/pouring out items.
Favorite TV show: Nothing, although he'll notice music.
Height: 29.5" Weight: 19.3 lbs

Lucas was a fairly easy, or straightforward, baby. I can already see that I'll have to adjust to him being a toddler. Nowadays, he's taken to tearing things apart, trying to play with plugs, relocating items as he deems proper, and terrorizing his sister. The absolute worst thing has been bedtime. I let him cry for 20 minutes the other night, came in to check, and he had beaten his face against the crib until it was completely covered in blood! I wanted to faint. Our kids just don't seem to care about causing themselves pain... I think we'll have to move him out of the crib now.

He started refusing the bottle recently...and milk altogether. He drinks water just fine from a sippy cup or straw cup. He's shrunk from 70th percentile to 5th percentile and hasn't gained much weight in the past three months. He handles and eats solid foods very well and still has two bm's a day, but he needs milkfat. I have tried goat milk, chocolate milk, lactose-free milk, toddler formula, vanilla and chocolate Pediasure, in a sippy cup, in a bottle, in a Nuby bottle, with a straw, in a bowl, with a spoon, mixed with cereal, heated, cold, room temp, and this is just in the past few days. It's all green eggs & ham. One day, I even denied him water to get him to be hungry or thirsty enough, but he just spit the milk out. He isn't making up for it through nursing either. I'll just keep trying.

Food is such a basic need, and it's affecting his sleep, so it makes the situation stressful. The doctor said he doesn't appear sick anymore and has put him on a high-calorie diet. He refuses nut butter, avocados, and cheese after a couple bites, but he'll take the two yogurts each day and eggs. And I'm supposed to give him butter on everything (eek) and attempt Pediasure again, too. If not Pediasure, there's a high-calorie version of Silk as well. I'm usually cook low-fat, semi-organic meals for the family, but like with Naomi at this age, I will have to make exceptions. The kids burn away all their calories. I sometimes will carry Lucas just to get him to stop moving. I know some of it is metabolism and genetics, too.

He's not saying much, just the occasional cry for mama, papa, nana (banana), ell (hello), and maybe all done. He makes sounds sometimes while pushing toys. He only signs "more" nowadays and shakes his head no quite a bit. I need to work harder on his vocabulary. Second child syndrome.

Lucas can walk across a room now before reverting to crawling. He also likes climbing, which sends me into a panic everyday. He is much more aware in this past month, so he doesn't just drift off to sleep anymore. As I said, he bangs his face and head against the crib every time I put him down and he has bruises all over his face, but the bloody face was the last straw. I feel so awful about it. :(

We chose to delay the MMR vaccine. The jury's still out on the link with autism and allergies, but if anything happened with Lucas, we'd like to eliminate the vaccine as a possible cause. Plus, I don't want to count out all the anecdotal evidence.

So many bruises from banging his head in the crib. :( This was before the bloody face night.

He started really walking about a week before his first birthday. Still soaking through bib after bib with that drool. He smells like dirty rags all the time, even five minutes after a bath. :(

First pizza. Nom nom nom nom.

Wrestling with Papa.

This is just some random goofy picture from a while ago, when he'd put on some weight again.

firefighter day:

Naomi's last preschool excursion was a visit from firefighters and a police officer at a park. Lucas was fascinated by the firetruck, but he and Naomi seemed intimidated by the crowd. While I was tending to Lucas, Naomi went running under the spray from the firehose demonstration before I could stop her. A number of other little ones then followed suit. :/ This was Naomi's last summer preschool class having wrapped up GymKids the day before.

Full gear.

The kids were allowed to see all the truck with all the doors and compartments open, as well as hold the firefighter gear.

first birthday cards:

Cards and giftcards came in the mail from Grandma and Grandpa.

Lucas likes those cards that open and play music. In particular, he and his sister have worn out one that plays "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang. This one plays the Superman theme.

He couldn't get enough.

Naomi put the Pooh card on as a mask to entertain her little brother. She makes an effort to never be left out.

sweet celebration:

We celebrated Lucas's first birthday yesterday, two days early, with ice cream cupcakes from Coldstone and a trip to a Carl's Jr. playground. We sang happy birthday with the Grandma on speakerphone. For Naomi's first we had a huge shindig and went to Disneyland, but she was walking and talking by this age, and very "aware," so it made a little more sense. I think a small, private deal for Lucas was all he needed. We saved our money, too. I'm also still under the weather. I have these very painful sores in my mouth and throat the doctor thought was probably from a virus. Tears come to my eyes whenever I swallow solid food. I missed out on the cupcakes! But the doctor said it should get better in a week or two.

And what did Birthday Boy think about his first cupcake? He downed that whole thing in no time (sans the chocolate shell, which would have been too hard for him). Also, we had the playground area to ourselves, so we let Lucas do a little with a lot of supervision from me and Manny.

Hey, Sis, wait up!

Something they can both do--crawl.

Inside the tunnel slide.

About to sing happy birthday to Lucas.

Using the spoon at first.

It wasn't efficient enough.

All done!

baby's first haircut:

It was overdue, but the thought of going near our squirmy Lucas with clippers and scissors terrified me. He's also sick (again!). We wanted to cut it before his first birthday, so it had to be done. Manny held him, and I just worked as quickly as I could. Like many Asians, Lucas has very straight and stiff hair. I sort of wanted to leave the top longer, but Manny wanted it a bit more even. It's a little sloppy, but I'm glad we got through it without incident. Naomi said she didn't like his new hair, "but at least he still has his smile." :)

It looks like I'm coming at him with the clippers.

Oh, so that's what he looks like without all that hair!

All done! My handsome, pensive, drooly little man.

quick date night:

It was sometimes extraordinarily stressful with my mom and brother here last week, but the highlight was a spontaneous Thai food run with Manny on Thursday night. It was a last-minute suggestion from Manny. I'd eaten a full dinner already, but I wasn't going to pass it up. I love Thai curry dishes, even though they're too spicy for me. The waitress/manager came by to check up on me a few times and brought me water. Haha. Manny was terrific company, and even opened my car door for me like old times. :) I think we were only out for about an hour, but I felt very refreshed. I'm glad the kids behaved with my mom, too.

photo time:

I think I forgot all about it. Too much going on in July, I guess. Today is catch-up day.

June 2009 Photos - Mommy & Me, Summer classes and trip, fishing trip, Gilroy Gardens, Father's Day, church events.

roses and robots:

Thursday morning, I took my mom and brother to a beautiful rose garden in a neighboring city. It's free. It may not seem like it from all the places we go, but I search for free activities all the time. My mom loves roses, but my brother actually was the one that wanted to stay longer. Naomi was cute twirling her umbrella, but then she took it and hacked at a bush, right in front of the volunteer worker (and she was Chinese--you might know what that means). We hightailed it out of there. :/ Well, I was scared of the bees anyway. We went to an Asian buffet place for lunch. Lucas slept through half our lunch and ate two salmon steaks, eggs, noodles, and other items for the other half. Naomi did well.

We then went to the Computer History Museum, another free attraction. My brother and I geeked out on exhibits like the second Babbage Engine (a giant hand-cranked scientific calculator of sorts), first Google server, PDP-1, Atari 800, home companion robots, and the chess room. I think my mom lost interest after the abacus. Naomi did pretty well and made the most of everything as usual. Lucas really hung in there.

Such a sweet little girl, at first glance. This was followed by the hacking of the yellow roses.

The center of the garden boasts a beautiful water fountain. Lucas and Naomi sorely wanted to jump in.

My photos don't do the place justice. The weather was perfect, too.

Babbage Engine demonstration.

You know that high-pitched "wong" and harp sound they sometimes play when something beautiful is revealed? Yeah, this Visible Storage display did that for me.

The first Google server.

puff puff, toot toot, off we go:

(Lyric from the song "Down By the Station") Naomi's preschool excursion this week was to a park that had a train ride, carousel, and a real decommissioned jet on which to climb. It went with our theme for her last class, transportation. The teacher said my mother and brother could come as well. They had a pleasant time, especially on the train ride around the park. Lucas seemed to enjoy the rides, too. He waved many times at my mom and Naomi's teacher on the merry-go-round. The trip was the same day as the concert.

Naomi on the pretend train with her friend "Cookie."

Me and the kids on the real train.

Lucas's first carousel ride.

Naomi's...50th maybe?

The T-33A jet for the kids. Naomi thought it was too hot to get in.

duran duran:

M, R, and I went to Mountain Winery in Saratoga to see Duran Duran last night. The sold-out concert was a bit subdued as far as DD goes, but they still rocked the house. Some of their songs are magnificent, while others are rather PG-13, so I don't advise people to go watch their videos just because I went. Noticeably missing from the set list were The Reflex and Hungry Like the Wolf. They didn't play The Chauffeur, one of my favorites which they played a couple shows ago. But it was still great. The kind folks at the venue did not pull the plug at 10:00 p.m. in accordance with the city curfew like they did Crowded House. So, we got to enjoy their encore till 10:30. Good show. The band allowed non-flash photography, which was swell. I took a few video snippets, since they turn out the best. My mom and Manny had the kids, which worked out okay, but I could've done a better job of preparing everything.

Beautiful venue.

Me with M. My first time seeing them, and she's seen them several times over the course of two decades.

It was mostly the Simon (lead vocalist) and John (bassist) profile show from our seats on the far left, but that was fine by us.

A couple boys in the front row John Taylor pulled up on stage.

heading to the airport:

I'm about to leave with Lucas to pick up my mom and brother from the airport! They're visiting for a few days. Then a half hour later, Manny and Naomi will arrive at the same airport. We couldn't sync it with the flight delay. Manny and Naomi went to Grandma's for my father-in-law's birthday and 4th of July. I hear they got a Slip'n'Slide for her! It was pretty easy here with Lucas, even though he's sick and a bit more clingy, and the fireworks were waking him up till 1 in the morning. :( But, yeah, he's not much of a challenge. I missed Naomi very much, but she really sucks the life out of people. Any energy she could exert chasing the family pets instead is fine by me. I think Lucas missed them, but it's just a hunch. He took three steps while they were gone, but he hasn't fully walked yet. It'll be fun if the family gets to see that. Party time!

funny and bittersweet (mj again):

Ok, don't take this the wrong way, but I lol'd so hard at this video.

Actual lyrics.

P.S. Contradictory to established rumors about the molestation cases, reports say the first boy's description of Michael's genitalia did not match (Reuters/USA Today), there was no semen found on the second boy's underpants (court docs), and the first settlement was not a pay-off for silence. MJ's insurance company pushed for the settlement. The boy refused to testify and his family did not pursue a criminal trial, the latter of which is kind of unusual. If it were my child, I would really want that person off the streets rather than the money. In the first case, evidence was presented, but they did not press charges. Not saying I was there and know for sure, but there are just so many rumors out there. I read a lot of the court documents a long time ago and was surprised, because I believed he did it and now say I don't know. Either way, if he did it or not, he has been judged for it, and public opinion is not the rightful judge. After all, people vote for presidents based on looks. ("Do not judge according to appearance, but with righteous judgment"--Jn 7:24) If people take Bashir's commentary in his documentary as truth, it's worth it to watch Take Two as well to see how editing and narration can sway an audience and take things out of context (although, of course, Take Two is an edited spin as well). Not that I think he was a saint or even acted appropriately, but a lot has been twisted to the point we may never know the truth. "Be careful of what you do, 'cause the lie becomes the truth..."
