February 2023 Part 1 (Birthday, Naomi camp counseling award, Isaac's field trip and teacher issues, date with Manny)

February was a nice month of outings for us. Manny planned a lovely date to Sausalito for my birthday/our anniversary. We went to Salito's Crab House and Prime Rib for lunch and a bakery and Lappert's ice cream for dessert. He doesn't love seafood, but thoughtfully takes me out for it on special occasions. We've been to Sausalito a few times, once before kids, once with my in-laws, once with our kids, and now just us again. Time flies but a lot changes, too!

My friends got me a gift certificate for a birthday cake, and I got a guava cake from La Patisserie bakery. It was not as pretty as Bijan's bakery's guava cake, but tasted better to me. I also ordered Mediterranean food for my birthday meal. Lamb and yogurt mansaf is one of my favorite special occasion meals. Lucas was asleep, and Naomi was really sick (but she did join us). Manny had to go to a meeting as well, so it's just Isaac and me in the photo. Nevertheless I had a really nice day, and feel blessed by the well wishes of friends and family.

My friend and I take each other out every year for our birthdays, and I always look forward to that. We went to Pacific Catch for seafood. It's hard to believe we've been friends for two decades. We've grown a lot in some ways, but in other ways we're still the same. I mean, she still likes My Little Pony, and I still like Peanuts and Sanrio. We have some very deep talks, though.

Naomi volunteered as a camp counselor for a YMCA science camp for a week in February. She had a terrible start, getting double the usual number of students due to a shortage in volunteers and also getting the most challenging of the cabins. But she worked hard and turned it all around and received the honor of being chosen by staff and students as the Counselor of the Week. Several of the girls drew her pictures and wrote notes of gratitude. The counselors chose a nature-related pseudonym for themselves for the sake of privacy, I assume so the kids couldn't try to find her later. She also had the most challenging naturalist, a woman from the South who ended up being reported, though I'm not sure what came of it. It was like a case of having to manage difficult people above and below her level, similar to Manny at work.

Isaac was adjusting well to school by this time, but his teacher would write these long emails about her opinions without concrete or even logical evidence to back it up. I heard later from other (boys') parents that she did the same with their sons. To appease her, though, I took Isaac to his pediatrician during February break with the list of concerns from the teacher, and the doctor didn't see any of it. In fact, she saw a couple of other traits in Isaac which made much more sense to us. Anyway, I sent the teacher the doctor's note, and she was partly dismissive and partly trying to pick it apart, so I told Isaac we would just need to hang in there the rest of the year until it was over. This year has been like night and day with his new teacher, who told me at the parent-teacher conference that she has absolutely no complaints or concerns about him. Isaac also had a field trip to the Tech Museum, but for whatever reason the Imax showing didn't happen, and I heard one of the parents say it wasn't well-organized this year.

Beautiful day in the Bay Area

Always fun to cross the bridge

Ice cream in the winter, of course

I got a seafood pasta and Manny got steak

I love to pet dogs whenever I see them

Heart-shaped cactus from my friend Andrea. It was shipped in a huge box because of this giant stick, which we never figured out. I assume it's for crawling plants, but that's not what this was.

Malasadas and decaf coffee

I got a sea bass with vegetables and elote corn

calamari

On occasion I cook something that reminds me of my childhood

Coach sleeping belly up because he is safe now

Isaac at Tech Museum for a field trip. I heard a parent say there were some hiccups so they didn't get to watch the IMAX show or do a lot of what they usually do on this field trip.

Naomi's camp in the redwoods. It had snowed the previous week, and roads were closed. I'm honestly so thankful her friend's dad was able to them, because I'd be very nervous driving in those conditions.

Naomi's always loved the woods

Fun to be out with my friend. These are my first pair of rainboots. So glad I finally got some!

January 2023 New Year, Last Year

I know I'm almost a year behind on the blog now, but it's actually kind of fun looking back. My memory isn't what it used to be, so even though I can't recall all the details, some of these things are great to look back on from the start of this year. Naomi's college applications were done, so now it was a waiting game. I couldn't believe she was about to graduate. That much I can remember. It felt like 2023 was going to be a last year of sorts. You'll see less of her on the blog now as I won't be posting her private photos, but overall it was a fairly good year for her.

Often I have low points in Oct-Dec, but mid-January I start coming around and feeling so much better. We rang in the new year at home, called the grandparents at 9 pm since it was midnight at Times Square, and I did stay up a little bit to catch Duran Duran performing at the New Year's Eve show. It was definitely a big year for them. I like to make pozole and mochi (I don't know how to make menudo and always miss my Manny's dad's menudo the years we don't stay till New Year's. I've been making fondue for New Year's for Naomi as a recent tradition. Even though she is lactose intolerant, Naomi loves a good fondue.

We picked up Pluto and Coach from their boarding care run by a luddite named Susan with no cell phone and no computer, but she is great with the cats. Coach is so cute, but Manny is apparently allergic to him. It's been a challenge trying to find something that works. At least the cats no longer had fleas with the new prescription treatment they were on. I prayed for that and will keep praying regarding the allergies. I actually think something is in our room, like mold or something, since I feel like I get allergies in there, too, but I can't tell for sure without some testing.

My women's discipleship group at church had a little joint celebration for our birthdays. It was really nice to gather. The way the groups run, it is a 3-year (from August to April for our group) rotation, and the members can choose to do all three years, after which we move on to either leading or something else. I love it, and I am now in my third and final year. I led a few meetings/studies last year, and will again this year.

Our neighbor also invited Isaac to join her and her son at the Physics Show, something I've always wanted to attend, but never did until then. It was really fun. I enjoyed physics all throughout grade school and college. I still think that kids should learn it early on vs. just earth sciences or biology first.

This says, "In the evening, I will get off work." Then, "At the start of tomorrow, Rabbit will be on duty." (Since it was switching from Year of the Tiger to Year of the Rabbit). Lunar New Year was in January this year.

Of course my picture won't do it justice, but it was cool and engaging

This is a common sight for us--Pluto by the cabinet with the treats and Coach sitting on or next to him

Roses from Manny. Yellow is so cheerful!

Putting together some photos for her senior ad. I didn't really plan for it and was in a rush, so just pulled up whatever photos I had and scanned them.

A proof of her senior photo. This wasn't the one that ended up in the yearbook but she looked cute either way. I don't have a copy of that proof.

Meat and veggies inside the buns from our group birthday celebration

My mom has an annual memorial celebration in January in honor of her late parents.

Our Lunar New Year meal, with fish (I get it without the head for the family's sake), duck, shrimp, pork, lobster, buns, and dumplings. I got the lobster for cheap because it had a broken pincher, and the women next to me were horrified, becaues that is a bad luck thing.

Black sesame tang yuan (soup balls), something I often had as a kid, but no one else here really eats them.

Naomi had her big milestone birthday in April, and we got to make up for our Hello Kitty Cafe celebration for my birthday by celebrating her...
