staycation/lucas appt/barbecues:

Manny was able to get Tuesday-Friday off, although he still had to work a little bit from home or wherever we were.  He actually saw his coworkers twice, on Wednesday at a lunch and Friday at a company picnic.  Wednesday evening, I went to a women's BBQ, caught up and met some new ladies.  I won the first round of bingo, continuing my winning streak (which was broken today at a baby shower, but I was close).  There's no skill in bingo, so it's not like I win because I'm awesome or anything.  Also, Manny's boss had all these Thomas trains their son had outgrown, so we hit the jackpot.  I only gave Lucas a few so far.  Yep, rationing.

On Thursday, I took Lucas to the doctor.  He is only a little over 6th percentile in weight and height.  The weight's okay, but the height is a slight concern because the growth rate is dropping so much.  He eats all kinds of fruits and vegetables, but not enough protein or fat.  He does now drink Pediasure, but only Banana Cream/Shake flavor, and once in a while chocolate milk.  I got the Bright Beginning vanilla soy drink the doctor recommended, but he doesn't usually like soy milk, although he can eat lots of tofu.  It's been tough getting him to eat anything fatty, but at least he's pretty healthy overall.

He also needs to see a speech pathologist, so I'll call the school district about that.  He's speaking a lot more, but it's too unclear for a child his age.  When the doctor asked him the color of something, he said, "oh-den" instead of "orange."  So cognitively, he gets it, but verbally it's not coming out right.  I hope it works out for us to get into a preschool program for him.

Thursday night we had our life group, and we finished up our study of Forgotten God (Holy Spirit) and had some great discussion and prayer about the future of the group and the alignment with the vision of the church.

A couple photos from the picnic Manny took the kids to (while I went grocery/clothes shopping in peace--thank you!):

We had such a great week with Manny around.  We all wish the staycation could have been longer.

family fun / fear of bugs:

Naomi loves I.kea Smaland.  Too bad they only allow 45 minutes in the kids' camp.  Naomi became the fearless leader right away and could have stayed for another few hours if we let her.  While she was in the camp, we sat down and had some quality time over lunch with each other and Lucas.  Afterwards, we went to the free junior museum/zoo and then made a stop at the mall for an errand.

The museum theme this year is bugs, and I always try to put on a brave face for the sake of the kids.  "Naomi, look!  H-h-here's a water b-b-bug."  My hands were shaking like crazy the entire time.  These are bugs inside tanks or entombed in plastic blocks, so nothing would happen, but I just couldn't handle looking at them.  My entomophobia is rather severe, and I don't know what caused it.  Maybe it was a spider crawling in my mouth when I was three, or the flying gigantic roaches in Taiwan, or the praying mantis and scorpions I saw split in half in Texas.  Whatever the case, I've tried to overcome it, especially in trying not to instill that fear in the kids.  Yesterday a wasp got in the house, and I told the kids to go cheer for their dad killing it.  They were fascinated by its dead body (well, mostly dead--the leg moved a little), while I remained in the other room with tears welling up in my eyes.  I'm actually a really tough woman, but bugs...yikes.

Something to climb on for Naomi, and a place she made a few friends.

Bobcat sunning.  Poor thing--some rowdy kids (not ours) kept taunting him/her.

Cute Lucas.

He liked this statue.

lucas, 3 years old:

Just this past week, Lucas has begun speaking more clearly, like saying "sour" instead of "sow-sow" and "noodles" instead of "noo-noo."  He still has quite a way to go with his speech, but it surprised me one day when I asked him if he liked the chips he was eating.  He just nodded his head and walked off, but then returned and asked, "What kind do you like, Mommy?"  That surprised me, and he's been dialoguing more since.  He still doesn't ask "why" or "when" yet, but he has "who," "what," and "where" down.  He'll have his check-up soon, and the doctor will re-evaluate his speech delays.  He still has a hard time pronouncing several consonants.  But in general, if I can figure it out, he says some pretty adorable things.

He is pretty compassionate like his father, always asking, "Are you okay?" and rubbing or petting someone who's been hurt (sometimes by him).  Lucas is less of a bully now and warming up to people.  He is doing better and better in Sunday school and in our life group, when he has to be with other children.  Right now, he is very helpful with certain chores, like gathering the laundry and picking up.  He cautions and commands a lot, probably just used to hearing it from me.

He's still small for his age, but also growing.  He's still noise-sensitive and likes it quiet, except at times when he's the one making the noise.  He's been unpredictable with his nap, probably wanting to drop it.  Potty training is still the same--he'll do one thing but not the other.

Lucas likes cars and trains just as much as ever.  He likes music, seemingly more so than Naomi.  She likes to perform, but he seems to enjoy the music for what it is.  He likes basketball, both watching and playing, although we don't have a hoop or anything at home.  He's pretty good with colors and knowing the details of all his little cars, but when I try to teach him something, he tends to lump similar things together.  He loves the sand and water, like many kids.  He really likes animals, but doesn't want to get too close.  I think he's that way with people, too.  I feel like I've raised the kids very similarly, but they are turning out very different in many respects.  Lucas just has some innate insecurities but some wonderful traits as well.

He doesn't watch much TV, but he likes to watch clips of vehicles on Y.ouTube.  A LOT of clips.  The kids both like the Charlie Chaplin clips I show them (I'm a big fan--Modern Times and City Lights are two of my favorites of all time), but I hope he understands when I tell him not to copy the stunts.  So no Buster Keaton...

He likes many fruits and vegetables, especially blueberries, strawberries, carrots, olives, small Brussel sprouts, asparagus, and certain tomatoes.  He likes pasta and rice, but not so much bread (unless you count pizza crust).  Still not much desire for dairy products, although one day he asked me for a cheese sandwich and actually ate it--bread and cheese are two of his least favorite foods, so I was pretty happy about that.  Once in a while he'll also drink chocolate milk or eat ice cream or frozen yogurt, but that's mostly it.  The only melted cheese he'll eat is on pizza, not even in grilled cheese or on pasta.  He used to love fish, but is getting more picky about that as well.  Oh, yeah, and he unfortunately has an ever-growing sweet tooth.  Naomi didn't have gum or soda till she was five, but now if she has it, usually he'll have some, too.

Not into pictures at the moment.

Playing basketball at church.

Likes to help me get the laundry.

misc update:

We went to visit J and daughter C last Friday.  We enjoyed hanging out with them.  On Saturday we had gone to get the portraits done.  After grocery shopping, I took the kids to the park.  Sunday was another great day at church.  We had a meeting with a couple elders before church, and will become members at the next business meeting.  We just talked about our lives and are praying for the best place to use our gifts.  The high schoolers led worship again.  It's always good to see that.  The kids did well in their classes, although Naomi was a little upset about being late because the kids sat with us in the meeting.  We heard a sermon on Revelation 2 and 1 John.  There's always too much to repeat, but I have been thinking about how we do often forget our first love.  After service, we had a barbecue celebrating the youth pastor and his family.  He had served in that role for nine years.

Manny went to breakfast with a friend this morning.  He has the day off (which usually translates to working a little from home, but we're just happy he's around).  Lucas had a nightmare last night and punched me in the eye in his sleep.  Still hurts.  At least it wasn't fully intentional.

It's a beautiful park with lots of palm trees and water, but I waited to bring Lucas because the water would be too tempting for a toddler (no wading allowed).

portraits:

We went with JCPenney this year, and they did such a great job.  Lucas was hardly cooperative, but it wasn't 45 minutes of crying like last year.  With our coupon, the portrait sheets were only $3.99 each.  I couldn't always step in to brush her hair, but I think overall they came out well.

all aboard for lucas' birthday:

Lucas wanted a train cake this year, and a train cake he received.  I made the frosting from organic ingredients (and then mixed in all this artificial coloring).  Naomi helped me make and decorate the cake.  It was nice to just have a celebration at home.  Lucas was aware it was his birthday, but isn't convinced he's now three.  Grandma, Grandpa, and Great-Aunt Quinka sent a package full of Cars clothing and cars.  Lucas was soooo happy and surprised.  He'd pick up one, and there'd be another one underneath.  Naomi also got some presents and was very happy with them.

Naomi carefully stacking Kit Kats on the cake.

Happy birthday boy!

Naomi and Lucas.

Wow!

He showed them all to me.

n's birthday party:

We went to N's 6th birthday party at...you guessed it...Pump It Up.  This time, no kids violated any safety rules (aside from Lucas throwing balls at my head), and Lucas actually had a great time.  It could be because it was an evening party.  Naomi liked rock climbing the most, which she had been too scared to do at her own party.  Lucas was fine as long as I was near him, and he finally warmed up to bouncehouses.  He also wanted me to take him down the giant slide two times.  It was a major workout getting up there while carrying him!  Lucas had three slices of pizza and ate with the other kids.  Progress!

lunch with E:

After church Sunday, we had lunch with E.  It was a send-off of sorts before he leaves for Japan.  We'll miss him, but it's nice that there are easy ways to keep in touch.

Naomi took this one.  ;)

naomi's writing:

I got a call from an old friend today, which is always nice.  The kids are usually pretty cooperative when I'm on the phone, but I still can't get to the phone too often or I'm usually out.  I came across Naomi's writing book and wanted to post some more of her writing/drawings:

"I love [M]ommy because she loves me!  And because she's my mom, of course!  And Lucas loves her, too!"  (She's still learning grammar, but she has a couple rules down.)

"I love the fair.  It's so fun.  And I love the [F]erris wheel.  And I love the ride where you go around in a circle."

"I love pumpkin pie.  It's so good and tasty.  And it's best on Thanksgiving!"

I like how she put curls in the title, "a fairy's life."

I thought this was impressive.  It took her many, many tries.  She was definitely determined to get it right!

mid-week company:

We had M & her daughter A over for lunch and afternoon play yesterday.  We had grilled teriyaki and barbecue chicken tenders and pasta salad.  I like this recipe that Amy mentioned in the comments here years ago, and I just use whatever pasta I have, with a little less garlic and vinegar.  The kids love it, as long as I use only English or Persian cucumbers.  M went out to run errands while A stayed here.  The girls had a few rough moments, but overall a great time.  The kids love having company.

The girls in the back, about to have their tea party picnic.

They changed clothes often and made their way through most of our home repeatedly.

Lucas wanted to be included in the popsicle break, but wasn't great about sharing his chair that Grandma got him.  We figured it out eventually.

April 2026 (Naomi's birthday, Michael, dinner dates, Frenchie puppies, Artemis launch)

Naomi had her big milestone birthday in April, and we got to make up for our Hello Kitty Cafe celebration for my birthday by celebrating her...
