New York Day 7 (St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, Rise NY, FAO Schwarz, Hard Rock Cafe, Times Square)

Our last day in New York, and we finally made it to Times Square that evening. Naomi and I did pass through it briefly after Hamilton, but we didn't stop to take it all in. It was our last big stop before we headed back the next day.

We went to Paris Baguette in the morning for some fruit and pastries. It was on the way, and the place we originally wanted to go to was actually closed. More extra walking and backtracking! Too bad we didn't get to see the New York Public Library this go-round.

Our first stop in the morning was St. Patrick's Cathedral. Once again we had great weather, albeit a little humid at times. Though we aren't Catholic, we can appreciate the architecture and work that went into building this beautiful building. After that we made our way to FAO Schwarz. They had the famous Big piano (not sure it's the original one), which was slightly smaller than I thought it would be. It was fun to see all the toys and plushies. Now that my kids are beyond the age, they didn't really need anything,b ut we still got Lucas a plush dragon and Naomi a Care Bear purse. I don't think we got Isaac anything, but he'd already picked up a few souvenirs in Chinatown.

We then made our way to Rockefeller Center. You can get coupons for passes to go to the top of the building, known as Top of the Rock. For an extra fee you can do a beam photo. They strap you into seats on the beam and then turn the beam so you can take a photo over the city. The beam is above the lower level of the roof and not out over the city, thankfully. I was still scared, though, so I had to sit in the middle. So we hit several of the observation decks or skyscraper lookouts in New York. We skipped The Edge, though it looked pretty cool, and we did not go up to the One World Trade Center Observatory. Maybe if there's a next time. But we were pretty satisfied with the ones we did see. They all had their unique views and experiences. Be warned it took a long time, maybe over half an hour, to get our Top of the Rock photos.

Manny found this cool museum/experience called Rise NY. It covered a lot of history and culture of New York, including the stock exchange, the skyscrapers, fashion, science, and founding fathers. There was something for everyone and a number of interactive displays and sets. It included a fun ride at the end similar to Disney's Soarin'. Then we were pretty hungry and had a big meal at Hard Rock Cafe. Probably the biggest one we've ever been to. It showcased lots of memrobilia, including original instruments and costumes, album covers, and photographs. Also on display were giant replicas of a guitar and even the DeLorean from Back to the Future.

We rested at the hotel before  heading back out to see Times Square at night. We got some dessert from Carlo's Bake Shop and some sweet treats from Hershey World. Honestly, it is sort of overwhelming and there are all these scammers you have to absolutely ignore if you don't want to be harrassed and of course huge crowds. But it was neat for the kids to see the tower where the ball drops each New Year's. I liked seeing the 3D billboard, though I couldn't stop to take a video of it and my photo didn't do it justice.

Overall, I was very thankful for the trip. We got to do so much and best of all go as a family and that all the kids were old enough to appreciate (and tolerate) everything. This was the first trip we took on a plane together since we went to Oahu with Manny's mom and dad seven years before. It may be many years before we all fly anywhere together again, so I cherish these memories.

At the very front there is a closed-off section I guess for those who want to pray

Quite impressive columns. Last time I saw something like this was in Europe.

The beam. You on this beam and they rotate you and take a photo. You're not sitting over the city, but it was still scary to me (not to anyone else; thus I am in the middle).

Times Square!

I got left out of the photos and videos at Times Square, but it's okay. I was wearing a white tee and a pink skirt if you want to imagine me there lol

New York Day 6 (Ferry to Brooklyn, Kayaking, DUMBO, Beat the Bomb Escape Room, Crossing Brooklyn Bridge)

New York City is made of five boroughs, and only left Manhattan on Day 6 to visit Brooklyn. We flew into Queens and saw Staten Island from afar, but that doesn't really count. Brooklyn is quite large, so we skipped Coney Island since the guide said it would eat up most of the day. Plus it rained throughout the day, so I'm glad we didn't have to contend with that.

In the morning we took the ferry from I think 34th Street to South Brooklyn. It's a good idea to get the app to check any schedule changes. You can buy the tickets on the app or at the terminal. I was really looking forward to the free kayaking under the Brooklyn Bridge (Note: you have to reserve ahead of time to guarantee a spot). Naomi and Manny opted out, which was probably a good idea as it was a pretty wet endeavor. Bring a change of pants or shorts if you can, as you'll be sitting in dirty water. There's also free kayaking at Hudson Yards. I only didn't do that one because it's more crowded, I read. If I could go back, perhaps I would have done that instead of the Museum of Illusions and not done the kayaking here. It was still fun, although the people in charge thought Isaac was having trouble when he was actually just stopping to relax and take it all in, so he missed out on some of the time because they latched on to his kayak and brought him back to rescue him even though he didn't need it. They also didn't have a life jacket that fit Isaac, so his was rather tight. Lucas was fine. I did not pick a good day to wear light beige shorts. Thankfully I had a light jacket to tie around my waist, or it would have looked like I had an accident in my shorts.

We explored Dumbo (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). It wasn't too crowded with the wet weather. I brougth my cute yellow polkadot umbrella, but don't have a photo with it. I liked the bright color on a rainy day. Afterward we went to Juliana's Pizza, a sort of revival of the original Grimaldi's. It has an interesting history that brought the original owners out of retirement. I'm all for historical sites and food. But be warned, the wait is so long. I think we waited over an hour and half to get it, and it wasn't during peak hours. So we finally got to eat a famous NY pizza before heading to a unique escape room experience that the guide had recommended (I had asked regarding a family game activity).

Beat the Bomb is not your typical escape room. Only around 10% of the teams will beat it, and usually only those who have done the room before. I didn't expect to beat it, but we did try! It was much more physical than I was expecting. For example, there was a laser room that flashed lasers in different configurations, and some of them you had to jump 2-3 feet over the lasers, which wasn't going to happen for Isaac, so I had to carry him over. And if you don't beat it, which is likely, you get hosed with paint. Even though you suit up in gowns, that paint can still get on your clothes, and it's not washable. When you're taking off the gown and booties, it can still drip it onto your clothes. Manny managed to not do that, so his clothes were safe. I still wear my now lightly dyed Hoka walkers. It's a fun memory, and I got those shoes with a Walmart gift card, so they wouldn't have been a huge loss. The Hokas were lifesavers. We walked so much, 10 miles on several days, and I managed to not get any blisters.

After that we got some ice cream and walked back on the Brooklyn Bridge. Manny was with Naomi, and I was with Isaac, but Lucas just shot ahead. I think he really needed to walk, but since he doesn't have a phone, it was risky because he kept going out of sight in the crowd. But we all found each other at the end of the bridge. Isaac and I had some heart-to-heart talks on the bridge, and I find that his thinking is mature beyond his years.

When we got back to the hotel after that long walk, Lucas still wanted to go up and down 21 flights of stairs! He was on a mission. New York was actually overwhelming for him at times. I think walking and climbing helped him relieve some stress and gave him a sense of accomplishment, too. We got some food from Schnipper's for dinner (not Xeno's pizza again since we had pizza already that day).
