May (30+ Clubbing Date Night, Church BBQ, End-of-School-Year Activities, Soccer Class, Memorial Day)

Just hopping on here to not fall too far behind again. On to May 2025 with a lot of happenings. On the home front, we had trucks come to tear up the plumbing next to our and others' homes, so it was a lot of noise and dirt and having to park my car further, but hopefully this fixed all the sewage problems for the townhome units across from us.

Speaking of home, my neighbor came up to me one day to tell me a suspicious man was wandering around near our home. We flagged down some officers passing by, and they spoke to him and he left. They were actually patrolling the area because of a reported scammer who had been going door to door and collecting people's personal and financial information. He came to our door oddly enough a little after the other man had been by our home. This was the first time our security camera footage was requested, and I was able to show it on my phone to the officers, who actually apprehended the man a little while later as he was making another stop nearby.

On a lighter note, Manny got tickets for this 30+ clubbing event (i.e., it started and ended early, and guests could leave early), so he went clubbing for the first time, and I went for the first time in 20+ years. They played a lot of older songs, even from the 70s and 80s. It's all secular music, so not for some of my friends who don't listen to that. The waitresses were also very skimpily dressed. It was fun, though, especially the lights and bubbles. We were out by 6 pm and ready for dinner. We had a delicious Mediterranean meal. Manny picks some really good places.

The month of May meant the end of sophomore year of college for Naomi, so we moved her out of her dorm. Unfortunately one of the two elevators was down, and she lived on a middle floor, so that meant the working one would fill up before stopping on her floor. It delayed us quite a bit, but thankfully we made it. Afterward Manny took us to eat at a Korean-Japanese fusion place. We celebrated the end of the year and Naomi's admission into an intensive and elite graphic design BFA program at her school. She worked hard and did an amazing job on her portfolio. I really would love to share her portfolio with you here, but it's private for her. Out of 400 design students, about 100 apply to two rounds of applications, and only about 25 are admitted at the end.

May was also the end of the year for Lucas's sports class, and the final year for the coordinator. She did an amazing job, and now there are four of us who have taken over to split up all the hard work she did alone. I got her some flowers, but she truly deserved much more, and I feel bad that we didn't do more to show her appreciation. I even only remembered the flowers because my friend had mentioned prior to that how when her child's school music teacher retired, no one really said or did much to celebrate it. I had actually coached for most of the year, and it seems like it will be the case again this year. I would say I enjoy it, but I would rather someone else do it. There were two months last year that another mom coached, and I was really thankful for the break. Our last sport of the year was soccer. Lucas improved from the previous year and got to be goalie a couple of times and did great.

At church we had a discipleship group potluck that was pretty huge and there was a ton of food. I brought a brunch casserole and some black bottom cupcakes that were leftover from the homeschool end-of-year picnic the day before. We sat with three men, and we went around the table talking about what encouraged us about the person next to us in the groups we were in.

A couple from church also hosted a pre-summer barbecue which was really wonderful. The wife's father was out there grilling. Lucas came with us, but the other kids just wanted to play video games, instead of outdoor games, so he ended up just eating and waiting around for us. I have an indoor grill from my Pampered Chef days that I used to make some food for Memorial Day. I haven't made big meals as much lately, but felt I should that day.

I took the boys to see Thunderbolts, which I liked. It was a little dark, but also covered themes in a way I hadn't see before in an MCU film (and I've seen almost all of them). The boys liked it. None of them were the original main characters, more like outcasts, but being together they had some form of community. And that's something we don't often realize how much we need. It's hard to come by for today's younger generations. I'm thankful for the communities and circles we do have. For myself personally, I sometimes think I don't deserve my closest friends, but we've stuck by each other through thick and thin.

On a side note, I participated in an AI study at Facebook. I received at $100 gift card, but my primary motivation was to inquire about getting my old account back. But sadly there wasn't anything the AI dept could do.

February part 1 (Birthday, Super Bowl, Valentine's, 25 Years)

I was on a roll during this summer updating the blog, but my other laptop stopped turning on consistently. I have a new laptop (thank you to Manny) and am back to catching up.

February is usually a lot squeezed into the shortest month of the year. The Friday evening before my birthday and Super Bowl, Manny called and said let's go out for pizza tonight with the boys. Naomi was home for the weekend, and she was out with friends briefly but came home for dinner. I was cooking some dim sum for her as promised, and but suddenly I had ten minutes to finish that once I heard the plans. I managed to finish and get dressed. Naomi's friends were over, and the timing and circumstances didn't work out for us all to go together. The pizza was good, Chicago style, and the boys liked it. They hadn't been to this place before. I used to frequent this restaurant with my coworkers back in the day. I think it changed management some years ago, so no more breadsticks. They still had the big glass mugs, though.

On Saturday Lucas had his Magic group, and I dropped him off and treated myself, but I don't remember to what. On Super Bowl Sunday, we made Super Bowl snacks even though we weren't able to watch the game live because our church service is held on Sunday afternoons. I'm really the only one in the family who's into Super Bowl anyway. I like the game, the ads, most of the halftime shows, all of it. Manny made his awesome nachos after he got back from coffee with his coworker, and I made some other small bites. Some friends gave me money to buy a cake and a birthday meal. I got a fantastic guava cake from a home bakery and some scallops for lunch, but I felt like those scallops weren't real, like just cut fish put on scallop shells? I later found out that this happens often, that they use imitation to save money at restaurants. Maybe they were real scallops, just with a different texture. The sauce was good, though. My in-laws also gave me a gift card, which I used to finally get a frame for my photomosaic Snoopy puzzle and a carrying crate for the car.

For Valentine's, Manny got me some pretty tulips. I made some Isaac-friendly treats. I think I've mentioned that with his eating condition, we decided on letting him pick what to eat for Valentine's since most other eating holidays like revolve around foods he can't eat, like Thanksgiving turkey or Easter ham.

February this year also included a major milestone--our silver anniversary! Manny planned the entire day and did amazing. The boys managed on their own, but we weren't ever too far away. We went to a Mediterranean restaurant that was once our fanciest go-to place when he had less. That was nostalgic, but we also have a little more now and could order an appetizer and dessert, too! It was kind of cool that there was a Chinese street festival going on we didn't know about, so we checked that out. We then went to get Thai massages. I don't generally do massages, but it was good to try it. If you haven't seen it, they walk on you, pull you in all sorts of directions, and really dig those fingers and elbows deep. In other words, it hurts. And I got the mild one! But afterwards I felt pretty good. Manny selected the more intense massage. He has been having some muscle pain, so that was good for him. He also booked a special Valentine's show at the local comedy club. The German comedian was pretty funny, but he's not clean. I'd never been in that comedy club, so it was nice to finally go check it out. Manny did an amazing job coming up with everything local and within walking distance of each other so that we didn't have to go too far from the boys. I got Manny a few small anniversary gifts, all with silver. I made a collage of our pictures forming the number 25 as well.

So, what do I have to say after 25 years? At our 15th anniversary, I had all kinds of marriage advice to offer, but just like getting older and realizing how little you know, as I've been married longer, I realize how little I know. I rely on God's grace and truth more and more. I think hope and prayer have come to the forefront now, more than doing whatever I think I should do to make my spouse happy or what I think is right. There's a book called Love & Respect by the Eggerichs that covers a fundamental tenet--that men want to be respected like women want to be loved, and it feeds itself positively or negatively in a loop. And something I've learned personally is that it's actually better to receive than to give. Having people who will pray for your marriage is also crucial. Still, I don't have tremendous wisdom, just continued trial and error, even now. Relationships certainly do sanctify you! And lastly, don't compare. What you see in public is often carefully curated, not a whole picture. As much as I love whole stories and value authenticity, things can be easily misconstrued, and I have others to think about, so at this point I only share the full picture with close friends.

Friends gave me birthday money to buy a meal and a cake. I am not sure if these were really scallops, but the flavor was good.

More of the tasty scallops that I'm not sure were scallops

Fantastic guava cake, very fresh

I volunteered at a book fair through our church. Children's literacy--still where my heart is.

Happy Valentine's Day

We can order appetizers and desserts now! Happy 25th anniversary to us!

Happy with my mansaf (lamb and yogurt sauce over rice), one of my favorite dishes.

Nice walk

Couples' Thai massage. See that picture? No exaggeration.😄

At the comedy club

Free birthday drink. I can't remember what I got but it was really good. Something that had macadamia in it, I think.

With my birthday food money, I got myself imported sardines. Yes, I did. I happen to love sardines. They were my only protein sometimes as a poor kid.

Frame from my in-laws, puzzle from my best friend

I started an exercise regimen, but it involves a rectangular mat, and rectangles are cat magnets. My cats even love sheets of paper.

August 2022 (First Day of School, End of Summer Outings)

In August, Naomi began her senior year, and Isaac began his first year in public school in the fourth grade. Before school they squeezed in some outings and trips to the pool. Naomi got to hang out with her friends more as more and more places and events opened up. Here are a few photos as I try to catch up to the present once again. I stopped blogging so much some years ago when I went through some trials of life, and then I just got so busy. But I had to go through my blogs recently just to find old photos and realize the value of keeping it up. I also miss just talking about what I'm learning in life.

Isaac's playdates with the neighbor include workouts.
