June Part 1 (tff concert, tennis, bookshelf project, petsitting, breakfast date)

I can hardly remember June now. I'm grateful for my calendar and photos! Back in June, I was still tutoring and doing Pampered Chef. Isaac just started tennis, which he loved. Manny volunteered for a scaled-down version of the church-community literacy event (Bookshelf Project) that I used to help plan and run. We had a nice breakfast date sometime in June. Isaac and I got to petsit our neighbors' cat and fish while they were on a trip. Their cat was the sweetest little cat, took a couple of days to get used to us. Seeing other cats always makes us appreciate how huge Pluto is! It's probably the Maine Coon in him.

My 80s concert buddy M. and I went to see Tears for Fears in concert at an outdoor ampitheater. They are one of my favorite bands and have been since I was 8 years old. I think they are truly one of the best live bands out there, even though they're primarily a duo. Both sing lead and one plays the electric guitar and the other the bass. Aside from the wafting of weed, it was an enjoyable concert. We got Groupon tickets for just $20, and we were on the lawn in the back, but it was just as good as a $100 show. Garbage opened for them, which is also a band I really liked in the 90s. You can see the full concerts from this past year on YouTube. Since I had the concert, I couldn't take Naomi to her friend's graduation.

May Part 3 (Concert, Movie Date, Film Screening, Side Jobs)

I took Naomi and a friend to her first concert at the end of May. It was for an indie punk band that played in a small venue in San Francisco. The audience was filled with teens, and I was next to the wall with all the other parents. The music is okay and a bit dark, though they did a cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U" which I and other parents recognized. Also at the end of May, my friends held an in-person screening of their award-winning documentary film Far East Deep South. I only had a small window, and I've seen the film a couple of times before, so I just made it for the Q&A and Ice Cream Social. We were planning to go out and eat afterward, but I couldn't travel to the location they were headed, so I didn't join.

Manny took Isaac to Gilroy Gardens for some father-son time. He'd also taken Lucas to Great America. I so appreciate his spending time with the boys despite his busy schedule. I also had some time with Manny. We went to see Top Gun: Maverick Memorial Day Weekend. It was pretty good, especially for those who have seen the original. It was cleaner than many of the movies out now and maybe actually even the original. And most of all, Manny and I had our first date in a while and a nice time together.

I also did my last Pampered Chef party in May. With prices rising and Covid letting up, business has decreased, and it isn't worth the effort for me anymore, even though I still love the products. I also continued my tutoring job, and by that time we'd switched the focus from reading to math. I'd considered taking on a second student, but things got so busy by the summer I'm glad I didn't.

Kind of a minimal Memorial Day this year--roasted zucchini, corn, and ribs

May Part 2 (Naomi's Show, Discipleship Brunch, C.S. Lewis Play)

We had some big events mid-May. Actually every month has felt big this year, because so much opened up after a year or two, though I wouldn't say that everything returned to how it was.

Naomi helped run the fashion show at her school, which is much more involved than it sounds and was a lot of work. Manny was able to help with pounding the grommets into her skirt. The original design was supposed to be a sort of electric blue, but her group couldn't find the fabric, so they went with teal instead. The theme of the show was "Wake Up," sort of a Sleeping Beauty meets current state of the world theme. It seemed a way for the Fashion 1 students to incorporate their pajamas, since they had not yet learned to make gowns and such. The teachers believes in having the students run the show themselves. I thought the class did a really great job, and I am proud of Naomi's hard work and doing what she enjoys. It was a packed show, though only I was there to represent our family. But her friend came and helped clean up afterward.

Manny and I also started our discipleship groups at church last year. They were pretty life-changing for us, very different from any small group experiences we'd had before. At the end of the year, they had one person from each group speak, and Manny did and so did I. I kind of felt like I couldn't share with everyone the deepest things I learned, so I gave what I felt a somewhat superficial speech. If I could go back, I would focus on a couple of big things that happened and have more candid reflection. I really loved what Manny had to say, especially in reconnecting with many in his family and asking for prayer for his cousin, who was suffering from a terminal illness.

Later that afternoon, I went with some friends from my previous church and an additional friend to see a one-man play about C.S. Lewis. The actor was very good. I'm not quite sure how he memorized all of that! It brought me back to my love of literature, biographies, and stories of faith. His life was pretty interesting indeed. Now I want to watch Shadowlands and read A Grief Observed. After the show, we went to have Greek food at Opa! restaurant. I of course love Greek food and was glad my friend got to pick because she loves it, too. Some years ago she donated part of her liver to save a friend, and she had complications from the surgery and has never recovered. She now has to walk with a cane and cannot drive. She lost the ability to work and has struggled, but God continues to provide for her.

May Part 1 (Meals, Mary, Movie, Moms Night Out, Mother's Day, Meow)

May seems forever ago, and I've really been busy but for our memories, I do wish to continue with the blog. It's honestly been pretty helpful when I'm looking for a photo for a family member or friend, or when Manny and I are trying to recall an event. But before it becomes ancient history, here we go for May:

Light minestrone soup

Pepper steak

Beef and zucchini

Berry cobbler with my leftover berry salad

The Pampered Chef ice cream scoop is my favorite

More Pampered Chef stuff I was using for an online demo

Pretty irises I grew from bulbs I got through Buy Nothing

Homemade tzatziki sauce. More Pampered Chef favorites: Citrus Press and Food Chopper

Aunt Mary (on the left) passed away in May. She was always so full of life and joy. Will be missed dearly at Christmas this year.

The first Doctor Strange was better. This one was a bit dark and violent for me, and as Isaac says, they "nerfed" him in this film.

Gift from my friend--spicy mango sauce (perfect), a satin pillowcase (perfect), and a coaster about being able to remember music lyrics better than why I walked into the kitchen (perfect).

Beautiful interior of Ettan (Cal-Indian fusion) restaurant

My friend A and me at Ettan

Delightful light desserts

Delicious and beautiful green salad

Curry leaves--so tasty and unique

Mother's Day flowers from the boys (Manny took them to get them) and Snoopy spatulas from Naomi

Thanks, Naomi!

Cuddly kitty

My baby

Naomi going to see her friend in the school play (The Great Gatsby)
