August 2023 (Last Days of Summer Break, Dorm Move-In, Catsitting, Work Anniversary, Homeschool Picnic, First Days of School)

We had a sendoff dinner for Naomi before college at a Japanese restaurant. I put together sort of a care package with cards and gifts for her to open at different times throughout the year, like when she had an exam, when she felt sick, or when she missed home. I knew she wasn't going to be that far away, but it's still a transition and a new experience to be living and studying away from home.

Manny and I moved Naomi into her freshman dorm a week before school. She opted for the cheapest housing, as she wanted to save some money. That came with its challenges, though it wasn't all bad. Not having AC sounds like a first world problem, but the way her room was, including having building hot water pipes running adjacent to her bed, the heat was just trapped in. The fan didn't help that much (I would still recommend the oscillating Woozoo fan for dorms). I gagged almost every time I visited due to the permeating putrid smell of her building.

On a positive note, she was placed in a double instead of a triple, so she had more room and didn't have to end up bunking. She also had private bathrooms on her floor instead of communal bathrooms, which was nice, though there were only two on her floor, and one always had a broken or clogged toilet. Another plus was being close to the main dining commons. The food was unpredictable. The good stuff was often gone before she got there, and sometimes the mystery entrees were an amalgamation of ingredients presented as exotic cuisine. There was one staff worker whose cooking was really good, and she and her friend from the dorm looked forward to when he was there.

Naomi has always preferred in-person interaction, and it wasn't as easy to make friends in the commons as it was in our day. Many of the students were just on their devices, kind of like what you see these days with adults at Starbucks. She also goes to a college where many students commute, which is another reason students may not find it easy to hang out, so to speak, but by the end of the year she had found clubs and made new friends from her classes, including her new roommates for this year.

Isaac also started that month with the first day of fifth grade. I took him to a trampoline park to blow off some steam. We also chased a meteor shower one evening, driving around to several stops for almost two hours before finally seeing the shooting stars...from our driveway when we got home.😄 Isaac needed to get out for drives a lot. I suspect he will be like me once he does learn to drive, as I find it relaxing to drive (except when there's traffic).

Lucas's online school starts after Labor Day, but we kicked off the homeschool year, and our return to the Christian homeschooling group, with a picnic and sports group game. I believe about 40-50 families attended. It's a pretty large group, and two other families from my church are in the group. There are very few homeschoolers at my church, but everyone is very gracious about the choices families make. In previous churches I either was told that everyone should homeschool or was told that homeschooling isn't a good idea. At least now I never feel pressured either way. Just seeing Lucas finally getting to play with other kids again melted my heart. Would love prayers for him to find meaningful friendships.

April 2023 Part 1 (Easter, prom dress shopping, dress making, family dinner)

April last year was a super busy month. Naomi had the prom, the school fashion show, her birthday, and her college visit. Manny had to travel to Taiwan for work. Isaac and Lucas has school projects. I look like a tired mess in most of my photos from this month. But it was a memorable one, and I am very thankful. At this point Naomi had just decided to attend a college close to home. She was also creating her collection for the school fashion show which she would be directing, getting ready for prom and finals, and thinking about her last months of high school. I think it was a surprise to her and her good friends, who did very well in school and won awards, that none of them made it into their top choices. This year as I mentioned saw an unprecedented number of applicants, and some thrived during Covid, while Naomi did not. Many things like volunteer work only opened up after junior year. And going to a more competitive high school, it was harder to stand out. I was fine wherever she ended up, though of course I wanted her to get in everywhere. Ultimately, though, almost a year later, I can say it really was for the best, and I am thankful for how it worked out.

I took her and her friend to the mall for prom dress shopping, but since I had to bring Isaac along and he wasn't excited about the dresses, we split up. We found some great deals at Under Armour. Naomi's friend M was able to find a dress, but Naomi came up empty-handed. Unfortunately pastels and shimmer were in at the time, and they didn't look great with her skin tone. We ended up ordering a black dress with tulle that wasn't very pricey, but now it was a matter of it shipping in time (spoiler: It did make it, but barely). We made a couple of trips to discount fabric stores for Naomi's fashion show. She did consider making her own prom dress, but it just would have been a lot of extra work on top of all the other stuff she had to do.

I also took her and another friend to the college campus orientation. Her friend ended up going the community college route to transfer elsewhere later. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, and I was very proud of my girl. I myself had actually planned to apply to the same college for grad school. Right now that is on hold with our family situation. Naomi probably is thankful that I won't be on campus at the same time!

Easter service last year was probably the last time I will tell Isaac what to wear to church. Manny said to just let him wear what he wants now. Our church like many churches tends to lean casual, but I still try to dress nicely for it. April also marked the conclusion of my second year in my discipleship group. It really has been life-changing.

Also, we got to go out to Olive Garden and the mall as a family for her birthday. We got some Crocs for the kids as well. It generally feels like Manny takes us out since I'm not the breadwinner, but I do work very hard as well. Her 18th birthday month was definitely a time of reflecting on how quickly time flew by, how much has changed, and what things remain.

October 2022 Part 1 (Foodieland Berkeley, Work Reunion, Lucas Award Ceremony, Visit with M, Memorial Service, NAMI Walks)

Yes, I finally have time to try to catch up again on the blog, so here we go with last October😆. Sorry!

By October, all three kids were in full swing with school.

Lucas's Honor Roll online celebration was postponed till October. He received straight As in the seventh grade. I visited with a friend of mine on disability and met her two cats (more nervous around people than her previous two cats). She sends me home each fall with fresh feijoa or feijoa chutney.

My former coworker and good friend, one of the nicest people I know, was back in California to visit. She invited a number of old coworkers I hadn't seen in ages for a reunion at the park. Several actually remembered me from my time at the company 20 years ago; others just met me. I brought Naomi and Isaac with me to the reunion, mainly so my friend could see them. Lucas and Manny couldn't make it. She had met Naomi and Lucas before but not Isaac.

I did my annual NAMI Walk with my friend in honor and memory of her brother. Her father also passed away recently, and it was a difficult time to walk without her father this year. They honored him at the event, as he did so much to connect NAMI to faith-based organizations. He was such an inclusive and joyful man. At the funeral, the attire was Hawaiian and the mood was light as we remembered him.

I also with Manny's encouragement took Naomi and two of her friends to Foodieland in Berkeley. It's good to see her out and about again, for her sake. The lockdown was so hard on her in all ways. She loves to try new foods, too. It was also a chance for her and another friend to check out the area as they were applying to school there. It was a crazy and stressful time for her with college applications. I'll have more to say on that later.

Naomi had her big milestone birthday in April, and we got to make up for our Hello Kitty Cafe celebration for my birthday by celebrating her...
